Recently I took time to ponder the question, what is your superpower? It really made me stop and think about what I Iike to do, what I am good at, and what I can share with others. There is no doubt that I love home decorating but while pondering the answer to this question I asked myself the big ‘why?’ Why do I love to decorate my home? The answer is, I want people to feel welcome in our home, to feel special, calm, and at peace while they dwell inside the walls that make up the shell of a house, and make them feel at home.
Sharing at least three ways you can turn your house into a cozy and inviting home.
Greenery and door decor in every season welcome guests into our home, and I hope it brings a little smile to their face too. Wreaths, topiary posts, and signs can all be incorporated to create an attractive walkway and entrance to your home. I rounded up a few pictures of entryways, and front door wreaths for you, let’s see your smile and hey come on in! The entry is your chance to make a good first impression.
This is our Christmas entryway in the picture below.
As your guest walks in the front door what is the first thing they see? As much as is possible, (there are days that we all have disasters to clean up) try to invite your friends into a serene, carefree space. A space that is free of clutter, and filled with light. Airy and oh so warm and welcoming, that’s the kind of place we all like to come home to.
The picture above is what you would see as you entered our home in February of this year. Hearts and flowers to share the love with you all month long. The diffuser on the island adds a lovely, cheerful lemon tangerine note to the air. On the opposite foyer wall, we have a coat rack with shelves for a few decor items (of course) and extra room to hang coats, hats, scarves with a large mat on the floor for guests to leave their winter boots. In the winter months, we keep a basket full of slippers or fuzzy socks by the front door for guests. We want to keep their tootsies cozy warm, and is especially appreciated with the cold, winter temperatures when the hardwood and tile floors are a wee bit cool to the touch.
Not my kitchen but I so love these pendant lights!
Clear off your kitchen island or better yet, make it a habit to keep it clutter free. Don’t let it be the catch-all place in your home. Organize and make sure that all your kitchen tools and accessories have a home and keep them there. Use one in basket on a side counter for papers and mail. The fewer items you have on your counters, the more welcoming, and inviting your kitchen will be. It is more pleasant for your for guests to take a seat at the island or kitchen table and they are definitely going to feel more comfortable if they don’t have to push stuff aside to find room to sit.

Florals and spring colors with a neutral sofa create a clean and inviting spot to relax and chat with friends. Add a touch of color with a beautiful rug. Large rooms can often feel immense and uninviting, a rug defines the gathering space. This has become especially important with all the tall ceilings, great rooms, and open floor plans popular today.
An area rug gives the room a more intimate, cozy, and inviting atmosphere.
Use baskets and boxes to keep things like remotes, glasses, and magazines out of sight. The more open space you have, the free-er your guest will feel to sit down and take a load off, we never want them to feel there is no room for them.
Have lots of throw blankets handy, and if possible add some extra ‘just in case seating’. Perhaps in the form of a stool by the fireplace or a bench behind the sofa that can easily be moved to offer additional seating. The more, the merrier in our home. Nothing says home like a basket of books, so are you ready to come on in and cozy up by the fireplace in our home? Eeeek, don’t you love that Slay All Day notebook? I picked it up at Home Sense the last time we went to visit our baby girl.
A cup of tea, a bite of pie?
Food, yes food, also creates a relaxed, cozy home.
The smell of a freshly baked pie or another home-baked dessert will definitely real your guest in and make them feel at home. I mean, who can resist that yummy dessert smell?
Not hungry just yet, okay then let’s get back to easy decorating for cozy.
Remember how greenery made your home welcoming outside, well it’s a must inside as well. Even if you have a black thumb like me, an assortment of faux greenery, a vase of flowers, or a few sweet succulents make your space peaceful and inviting. Scroll back up to my kitchen and check out how I add a few flower stems above the range and roses in my pitcher to warm up the space.
A bouquet of flowers any time of the year will bring a smile to the face of anyone who enters your home, including you. Unless you have hay fever, then I suggest you opt for high-quality faux flowers. Place flowers cut fresh from your yard in a simple vase, to bring the outdoors in, nature has its own inherent welcoming vibe.
Succulents, sweet and small may be added just about anywhere for a pop of nature without being overwhelming. These are readily available live and faux, making them an easy choice for everyone and anyone to use and decorate with, in their home.
Try to add one item of greenery to every room in your house, you will be amazed at what a difference it makes. Greenery will make each space feel calmer, cleaner and lighter which means you and your guests will be more relaxed and happy in your home.
I have so many more ideas but best sign off for now. To sum it up, these three plus things will give your home a cozy and inviting feel: greenery in various forms, uncluttered space, an area rug, light and airy decor, and Food! The most important being good food :).
