How to Stretch:

  1. Only stretch to the point where you feel a slight tension.

  2. Relax as you stretch.

  3. No bouncing!

  4. Breathe slow and in control.

  5. No pain!!

Forget the old saying “no pain, no gain.”

Pay attention to your body, pain is an indicator that something is wrong and please,  remember to breathe!

Count slowly 10-30 seconds while you stretch. If you are holding your breath, or the mild tension does not decrease as you maintain the stretch, then you need to ease off.

  1. I can totally agree with every each advice! I am practicing yoga 5 years already and stretching is part of my everyday life 🙂

  2. This is great advice! I could have used this reminder a few days ago. I went into a split deeper than normal without proper stretching & pulled a muscle. I won’t make that mistake again. Stretching is something I need to add to my routine.

  3. Stretching is an important aspect of the day. But somehow I manage to avoid it, unless I work out. I really want to get in a routine to where I stretch morning and night.

  4. Love this! Stretching is so important to us physically but really it makes a difference in how I feel mentally for the rest of the day.

  5. Clair

Love this! I need to start adding stretches to my daily routine…I completely agree that it is one good way to help with relieving stress 🙂

  6. I was just saying this to someone the other day, I feel like the older we get the more we forget about stretching! But it’s so important, especially when starting off our day!

  7. I hear so many dance teachers tell them to “bounce” and I want to scream! It’s not good! Thanks for sharing and maybe someone else will start wanting to scream it too!

  8. Hilary

I recently started stretching more and it really is amazing how much better you feel! A couple of these I don’t do though so I can’t wait to try them

  9. I always tell myself that I want to get in the habit of stretching daily, but I’ve been so inconsistent. Reading this makes me really want to get on it. Thanks for sharing these great stretches for ideas. I also didn’t realize that “bouncing” wasn’t good when stretching. I thought it was suppose to help lol

  10. I so need to learn a really good stretch for my back. I’m so stiff and slightly hunched these days. I’ve had to start going for massages every other week to relieve the pain.

  11. Thanks for the reminder! Gotten a bit lazy over the past few weeks with stretching in the morning. I find it really does make a difference for waking me up!

  12. I found myself stretching while reading this. Thanks for this one. Stretching is underrated but it can really help our body to relax and heal, if needed.

  13. I always think stretching isn’t important and often skip it after a workout but you’ve made me realise how quick and easy it can be

  14. Marni

Something so simple can really have a huge impact on your day. It also serves as a reminder that we need to take time to take care of ourselves. It doesn’t have to be overwhelming- just take 30 seconds if that is all you have!

  15. Stretching is so important. I remember once I fell down and I was lucky enough not to sprain my ankle and the doctor told me it was because I was so stretched. 🙂 But I stopped stretching a while ago and now need to get back to my stretching routine.

  16. Tracy @ Cleland Clan

I like to walk in the early mornings before work. I really feel it in my Achilles tendon when I’m done which makes it hard to stand in heels all day. Light bulb moment: I haven’t been stretching first! Thank you for this reminder.

    • Thank Jennifer! I will ask you how the Yoga resolution is going. Yoga with Adrienne has an awesome online yoga series to get the year started right, The Yoga Revolution! You should check it out, I am sure you will love it.

  17. Every since I started working out at the beginning of this year, I find myself stretching a LOT. Not just before and after work outs either. I just get the urge to stretch, so off I go!

    • Hi Sarah, I know what you mean, it seems when we start paying attention to our body we ‘hear’ what it needs, and stretching is part of that! Keep up the workouts and take care!

    • Thanks for stopping by Mandeep! I love yoga and it is a daily routine I can’t go without! I love the mind-body connection to a yoga workout, I am writing a post about yoga and should have it live next week. Come back and let me know what you think!

    • Hi Janet, how long have you been practicing yoga? The benefits I have noticed in my life over the past two years are stunning, it keeps me balanced and aware of my body and promotes healing in all areas of life. Come back soon to check out my post about the benefits of yoga!

  18. This is such a great list of reasons why stretching is important. I have noticed that if I do not incorporate stretching into my daily routine, I can totally tell. I have a job that is kind of taxing on the body and stretching has truly helped me make it through my shifts. Thanks for the reminder of its importance to other aspects in life

    • Hi Victoria, thank you for checking in with us. It is important to listen to the clues our bodies give us. A few breaks to stretch during a workday can have a huge impact on our mental and physical wellbeing.

  19. I need to start back up with my stretches. The only thing that could have made this better were some picture demo’s! I always worry about my form!

    • Thanks for stopping in Livvy. You really can get in a stretch while doing almost anything, a few deep breaths work wonders too.

    • Glad to hear it Nickia, there are also some awesome stretches you can do before you even get out of the bed in the morning to start your day off right.
