Self-care is a habit as important as a regular dentist appointment. Something that you schedule into your day and life and commit to like you would for anything else in your diary. There are so many self-care ideas to put yourself first that I will be talking you through today. These are simple habits that you can add into your day to start seeing the benefits that self-care has to offer. I also recommend creating your own list of self-care activities from things you enjoy and that make you happy.
The benefits of self-care.
Self-care can really improve your quality of life. I hear so often “I don’t have time for self-care” but the truth is, if you make time for self-care you’ll see an improvement in every other area of your life so it’s well worth making the time. The most obvious benefit is that it will help you to feel relaxed and refreshed. Having that time to recharge is really important and will have a positive effect on your home and work life.
By making time to put yourself first regularly you allow yourself to feel happier. Being in a better mood will mean your relationships with family, friends, and colleagues will improve. It’s a known fact that if you’re feeling overwhelmed and stressed you’re more likely to snap at others, feel agitated and argumentative, and this will improve the quality of your relationships. Studies have shown that regular self-care can decrease stress, overwhelm. and the likelihood of burnout.
So now that you know why you need to start making self-care a priority let’s move on to how you can practice self-care.
Reading is a great way to get lost in the present moment. You can choose to read any type of book that you enjoy. Spend some time cozy with a blanket and your favourite drink and spend as long as you want reading. Personal development books are a great way to learn new habits and improve your mindset and life while having the enjoyment of reading. (LisaRecommendsBigMagic)
Watch your favourite film
I love to do this on Friday evenings. Fridays are my self-care evening without fail. I never plan any business work for Fridays and I block it off for self-care. Spending time watching your favourite film (or any film) is a great way to relax and unwind. Films are a brilliant way to escape your thoughts and worries by focusing on what is happening in the film. Make a list of all the films you enjoy and want to watch and schedule time once a week to watch them.
Home spa evening
This is a great excuse to have a pamper-time. You don’t need to go to an expensive spa for pampering, you can do it in your own home with your own products or get creative and make some DIY home spa products. This can be as simple as painting your nails, having a warm bubble bath and using your favourite body lotion.
Spend some time thinking about what your dream future looks like. Get creative and find images of your dream future (I recommend creating a secret board on Pinterest with your images). Schedule time to get lost in the future. Imagining what it would be like using all the senses. Journal about it and how it feels. Look through the images and regularly add new ones when the ideas come to mind. Think about your personality and habits of the future you and how that would make you feel.
Listen to music
Create a playlist of all your favourite music. This could be music that makes you feel happy, relaxed or any feeling you want to feel. Make the time to listen to this playlist throughout the day – when getting ready, in the car or doing the housework. It’s a great way to improve your mood and feel amazing when doing everyday activities. Beats Solo Wireless On-Ear Headphones available in pretty and feminine rose gold with outstanding sound quality make it easy to listen to your playlist anywhere at any time!
Schedule time where you won’t be on your phone. For me, this is the first and last hour of the day at least, when I’m watching a film or spending time with family and friends. Put it in another room or ask someone to hide it from you if you have to. Having this time away from your phone is such an important self-care activity. Make a list of all the situations where you will not have your phone (this could be when walking, in the bath, or the same times as me). Stick to this and spend that time away from your phone daily.
Watch something funny
“Laughter is the best medicine” is a quote that I love and find is true. If I’m feeling overwhelmed, stressed or upset I put on my favourite comedy shows and laugh. It makes me feel happier instantly and removes all the stress and worries. I then find that when I go back to what I was doing before I’m refreshed and ready without the worries I had before. Create a playlist on YouTube of your favourite comedians, or collect your favourite comedy shows and have them on hand when you need them.
Eat out at a restaurant
Going out for a meal with your family and friends is a lovely way to practice self-care. It gives you time out of the house, to spend with family and have quality time with those you love. I highly recommend this being a phone detox occasion too so you enjoy it even more. Make a list of all the restaurants you’d like to visit and then schedule how often you’ll go and with who.
Try something new
This is a unique one and that is very beneficial to you. It expands your mind, your comfort zone, and allows you to spend time on yourself while improving your life. There is always something new to learn. Make a list of all the things you’ve wanted to do – learn an instrument, a language or art. Go to a new place, restaurant, or anything you can think of. Schedule this into your life on the time period that suits you. Involve your friends and family to keep you committed to it.
Go for a walk
This is one that is so simple and very effective. Being surrounded by nature is a great way to feel relaxed and refreshed. It is known to improve your mood. As well, the movement of walking which is proven to release positive hormones into the brain gives you a mood and energy boost. Schedule the time to walk every day even if it’s just for a few minutes or walking to work instead of driving. You’ll see a huge difference in your mood for the rest of the day.
Make your own list of Self-Care Ideas
Now that you have some new ideas it’s time to create your big self-care list full of everything you can think of. I also recommend block scheduling time in your week for self-care. For example Friday evenings and Sundays. You can then start to plan your time into this schedule and feel the amazing benefits of self-care.
