Even though making your home smell amazing seems like an easy task, the fact is that there are a lot of factors that can make it a bit tricky. Stale air and lingering smells are what you should get rid of as soon as possible, so if you want to know how just stay with us and keep on reading. Here are seven amazing tips on how to get that done!
Essential oil diffuser
An essential oil diffuser is really easy to use – all you should do is to fill it with water, add a few drops of essential oil in it, and turn it on. The diffuser will then create a fine mist that will carry the beautiful scent of those essential oils throughout your house, making your place smell really nice and pleasant. I bought two of these Cool Mist Air Fresheners, one for my office and one as a gift for my daughter, we both love it!
Fabric spray
Another quick way to deal with smells in your house is fabric spray which, truth be told, won’t eliminate them completely, but it’ll cover them up for some time. Essential oils are a good way to go – just pour some water in a small spray bottle, add a few drops of your favourite essential oil, and a bit of baking soda, and voilà – your fabric refreshing spray is all done!
Gel air fresheners
Crafting some scented gel air fresheners is another way of putting essential oils to good use, and what’s even better about them is the fact that they’re really easy to make. You can customize your favourite scents, use some cool colours, and even add decorative items like dry flowers or shells – possibilities are truly infinite, but they’ll definitely make your home smell really nicely! You can also purchase ready-made gel air fresheners made with essential oils like this energizing citrus scent >> Smells Be Gone!
Scented cleaning vinegar
Getting rid of some hideous smells in your home should start by eliminating their source, instead of just covering them up. That’s why you should use a cleaner that leaves a fresh scent behind. Even though you’ll probably frown at vinegar-based cleaners, knowing that this ingredient doesn’t smell really nice, the fact is that it will eliminate all those bad smells – especially when paired with citrus fruits. Don’t wait any longer and give it a try!
Air purifying plants
Plants are very well-known for their air purifying characteristics, and you should definitely get some if you still haven’t. Some people say that orchids and palm trees are the best when it comes to purifying the air, but if you think these won’t be enough for your home, you should certainly get the best air purifier for mould. Opt for the one that features HEPA filters that can rid the air of mould spores and improve your home environment in the blink of an eye!
Wax melts and Candles
Scented wax cubes are another way of making your home smell beautifully, and one of the best things about them is that they can spread an amazing scent all over your house. You can always buy them if that’s what you like, but you should know that making them is a lot of fun, plus you’ll be able to customize them according to your own wishes! Scented candles are another affordable option to rid your home of unwanted odours. The large selection that is readily available makes it easy to find the scent that suits is aromatically pleasing to you. Check out this set of four soy candles >>Our Own Candle Company, they come in sweet mini-mason jars. Two of the scents are hot apple pie and lemon pound cake; your home will smell like you just baked up a storm!
Garbage disposal cubes
Your garbage bin is surely the biggest source of some strange food smells that are likely to spread all over your house whenever you open it, but don’t worry – there are ways to clean it properly. You can make some frozen disposal cleaning cubes using citrus and white vinegar. These will make a huge difference, so give them a try as soon as possible.
As you can see, there are so many ways to get rid of the bad smells and make your home smell amazing all the time!

Love all of these! I am not much of a plant person, but I use most of these around my house to keep it smelling fresh and sometimes seasonal!
A very detailed and interesting guide. Would like to try them all.
I love when people walk into my home and think they’re walking into bath and body, lol. I love for some candles and plugins! I also have an oil diffuser in my office, which I use when doing homework or working on blog stuff.
I really like the idea of using a combination of these. Especially the garbage disposal cubes.
I have to check out these garbage bin tablets. That can be a real issue. We are lucky in our village that we have 3 times per week garbage pick up. Important as we don’t have an outdoor area. I love essential oils and scented candles but not all scents. Too flowery and sharp and it makes me feel nauseous. Lovely post as usual!
That’s exactly what we need at home. I think I can give a chance to the oil essence diffuser. I have not tried before but I receive good comments about it.
i love coming back home with the scent of lemon grass as it reminds me a lot of home Thailand. Since moving to Canada, i use a lot of diffuser and candles but i haven’t tried garbage disposal cubes! now im curious! i also use pillow spray and it helps me sleep better!
Great post Lisa!! I love love love having my essential oil diffuser going all the time!! I also love hanging eucalyptus in my shower…it gives off such an incredible aroma…make me feel like I’m at a spa lol! I would love to get some plants too…I actually don’t have any! Thanks for the ideas!

Awesome list! I love lighting candles in the winter – makes the home feel so cozy and smell so good. I’ve never heard of garbage disposal cubes – what a great idea! May need to invest in those.
I’m a huge fan of scented candles and huge plus for them is that they’re super pretty. But inspired from this post I definitely need to try essential oils!
I use an essential oil diffuser but now i need to look into the garbage disposal cube idea! I’ve never heard of that before!
These are some great tips. I wish I could keep a plant alive long enough to have it help clean my air. But alas, I am no green thumb. 😉 I do love my essential oil diffuser that helps a lot. With two young kids and a dog, staying on top on smells is crucial in my house. I appreciate new good ideas for this task.

I’ve never thought of the garbage disposal as such a culprit! And I love the idea of making your own gel air fresheners – such a great way to save money <3
Love all your suggestions. I love using my essential oils every night.
I am a diffuser and wax melts girl. I used to burn candles in my previous home but when we moved I was shocked at the discoloration left on the walls behind my art work, I guess I never thought about how much soot and smoke was going into to the air with that scent.
These are great ideas Lisa! I’ve been wanting to make my own fabric spray for awhile now. I haven’t thought of using vinegar as a base, so I’ll have to give that a try.
Thanks for these suggestions. I always like good smelling scents throughout my home. I didn’t know about Plant purifiers – how wonderful!
I’ve been researching air purifying plants lately. I have a small apartment and a Pug, so my goal is that people do not know there is a dog in the apartment when they enter until she is visible! I don’t like when you can smell a pet before you see a pet.
I love a good smelling house! I’ve never heard of garbage disposal cubes.
I love it when my house smells good. Since I don’t have time to bake on a daily (or even weekly) basis, I sometimes simmer some water and cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice on the stove just to get that great aroma. I love the hint about making disposal cubes out of citrus and vinegar–I’m going to have to try it soon.
I totally needed this. I have 5 dogs and the house can smell. Not that bad, but not good either. With these suggestions, I could start being more mindful of keeping the house smelling nice. 🙂
Lisa, your blog is absolutely beautiful! The disposable garbage cubes are on my agenda this week! Thanks much!
Hi Cathy, thank you for your kind words! Be sure to enter for the draw I am hosting, you can win $200 worth of Arbonne natural skin care products.
i love this house and its design thanks for the sharing with us.
I love oil diffusers! I also use little wall-plugins too. Essential oils are my favourite for using in the home, especially lavender.
There’s something SO AMAZING about a heavenly scented home. We use our diffuser regularly, but you’ve inspired me to pick up a houseplant or two!
I LOVE my diffuser! I have it going all the time!
Yes! Love this, i’m so obsessed with making my home smell like autumn right now. Even though we won’t see autumn in Florida for a long time! Love wax melts, they are probably my favorite but I definitely need to check out the garbage disposal idea! Thanks! -Erika-
I am so obsessed with wax melts at the moment. I love my home to smell nice. I have a dog and always conscious that although he’s cute, dogs do smell sometimes.
I didn’t realise plants could do this! I usually have scentsy wax melts on the go.
I gotta try the wax meet and the fabric spray!! Great suggestions
A good read and great tips. Thanks for sharing

Hi Christina, thank you kindly for this nomination. I am truly honored.
Love all these different options! Wax melts are my favorite
My go to is the candles from Bath and Body Works. I have people in and out of my house all the time and I always get compliments.
We have several diffusers and a ton of essential oils at our house- it’s definitely our favorite way to keep the house smelling nice. Love all of your suggestions.
I love fall smells! Awesome post!
Thank you for all the tips, love when my house smells lovely, there’s a couple tips here I haven’t tried yet!
Frozen, disposable cubes!?? What a great idea!! I have 3 kids in diapers and always worry about lingering smells. Thanks for the post!
I definitely need to try those disposal cubes for our garbage container… 🙂 And I didn’t know plants made such a difference!
Love these ideas. Do you have any air-purifying plants that you recommend?
Hi Bailey, I like Spider plants, and Dracaena because they are darn near impossible to kill and I do not have a green thumb. I wouldn’t recommend Dracaena if you have pets though as it can be poisonous.
We’re definitely big into our essential oil diffuser! I actually want to order a few more to place around the house.
Unless I missed it, I don’t think you recommended a specific diffuser… do you have one in mind?
Hi Laura, I recommend the diffusers available from Young Living, here is a link to their site >> https://www.youngliving.com/en_US/products/c/diffusers-accessories/tools
Im going to try the disposal cubes! Thanks for the tip!
I loved these tips . I would love to get a diffuser and I love the idea of scented cleaning vinegar as some cleaning products are just so overpowering and full of chemicals . I have never heard of disposable garbage cubes that is an excellent idea 🙂 No one wants a smelly kitchen 🙂
I so wish I could keep indoor plants alive. I’m going to try gel fresheners! Thanks for the tips. 🙂
Great tips. Are there any particular essential oils that you’d recommend?
I love lavender essential oil in the bedroom and lately in the main rooms and bathrooms, I have been crushing on a mix of pink grapefruit with hints of strawberry and citrus.
Great ideas – I love the natural ones! Will definitely give some of these a go…

Great tips for anyone looking to spruce up their home with some good-smelling scents! I feel like my own home has gotten so stale lately, given the summer heat (which just won’t go away!) Thanks for including natural solutions as well.
I’ve been meaning to try a diffuser. I’ve never heard of disposal cubes! Sounds cool!
I love that you included natural ideas in addition to pre-made products. As someone who is very sensitive to fragrance, I really appreciated this extra thought.
