I gave birth to my first baby just a few months back. When my husband and I brought her home, my mom also came to stay for two weeks. She was such a huge help with the baby, cleaning, doing groceries, cooking, and so much more! During the time that she was here, we thought it might be fun and a good idea to organize my kitchen!
I love to cook. I actually have a food blog because I love it so much! I make everything from soups to cupcakes to crockpot meals and pastries! My kitchen usually has flour strewn about and remnants of garlic and onion by the sink. It’s the place where I get creative, make messes and never stress about it.
My mom thought it would be a great idea to get all my stuff in order while she was here, so she went out and bought some neat things to help keep my stuff in order while I’m having a long recipe testing day! I’ve now been using these techniques for around three months and they have kept me much more organized in the kitchen. I’d love to share them with you today.
1. Organize Your Baking Pantry
This one I’ve done for a while. I’ve noticed that some people keep the bags of open flour and sugar in the pantry. There’s nothing wrong with it, but it should be kept in an airtight bag or glass container to preserve freshness.
A great way to do that is to buy storage containers from Bed Bath and Beyond and organize your baking ingredients! I keep a large container for all-purpose flour (and another for rice, actually!). I have containers that are half the size for granulated sugar, powdered sugar, brown sugar and cocoa powder.
These containers are easy to clean, refill and pull out of the pantry when it’s time to use them. So much easier than dealing with packages and accidental pantry spills.
2. Use a Tupperware container for all granola bars.
In my home, we each like different types of granola bars. At any given time, there are four or five open packages. It quickly became a mess and we had cartons of granola all over the pantry drawer that were opened and used. You couldn’t easily tell what was left in each.
Now as soon as I get home from the supermarket, I take all the granola bars out of the boxes and place them in a Tupperware container and dump the boxes. There, they easily stay organized and I can tell what we have and what we are running low on!
3. Keep Essential Utensils Together…
…and get rid of the rest! Just kidding. Definitely go through them and get rid of anything you don’t need or have duplicates of. Then go through it again and decide what you use on a regular basis and what you don’t. For me, that means my spatulas, can opener and wooden spoons all live in the accessible drawer. Pastry cutters, extra spatulas, and pizza cutter are in a different location.
This eliminates a crazy drawer of utensils which makes what you are looking for hard to find! If possible, keep the essentials near the stove top in an accessible place. Get a little container and put the rest away. Definitely keep them in the kitchen, but somewhere else so it doesn’t crowd the drawer.
4. Keep Water Bottles in a Specific Place
Water bottles can easily go crazy in our fridge! We used to place some in any empty spot in the fridge to keep them cold. It became a mess! So, we bought a water bottle storage unit to keep them in one place. Since we started doing this, it is organized, and we can always tell how many we have left. A lifesaver in our home!
5. Keep a Container for Tupperware Lids
Yes, we all have a crazy Tupperware cupboard. I know, it becomes a huge mess! I’ve been there far too many times. But I found a little way to keep things a little more organized. Of course, try and stack all the Tupperware as best you can. By size, shape, etc.
Now, take your biggest Tupperware (or another container altogether if you prefer!) and place all the lids. Organize them from largest to smallest. That way you have all the lids in one place and if you need one, you can take out the whole container and look for it. It’s made keeping that area organized so much easier!
